Boeing has emphasized affirmative action based hiring over and above merit based hiring. On their website, Boeing states, "As such, Boeing is committed to taking affirmative steps to promote the employment and advancement of minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and protected veterans. Boeing has developed and implemented Affirmative Action programs to further support its commitment to the principle of equal employment opportunity." Link
While I am extremely happy and encouraged to see diversity within companies, I also feel that merit - not skin color or sexual orientation - should be the focus during the hiring process. By focusing less and less on qualifications and merit and more and more on quotas and skin color, Boeing is missing the point of Martin Luther King, who emphasized personal character over skin color. There should be no prejudiced - either for or against a person - while hiring. As one Boeing employee reports on Glass Door, "Almost everyone is welcome. if you are not 'diverse' you are at a disadvantage" (Link).
Even worse, by abandoning its laser focus on merit and qualifications, Boeing is actually risking the lives of those who use its planes. As PJ Media states, "One may also wonder to what extent...the practice of affirmative rather than merit-based hiring practices played a role in this, and no doubt other such disasters." Link
